Boy George - Live Your Life

So on Sunday night Ruth and I saw Boy George live again at The Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh. As I said on Twitter he was entertaining, gracious and funny and is definitely one of my favourite live artists. It makes me sad that so many people don't know any of his output since the Culture Club days. His current album This Is What I Do is a fantastic album which is well worth listening to all the way through - here's the first two singles from the album as previously posted on The Fine Tuner:

The track in the video above is one of my favourites from the album - it's called "Live Your Life" and is a reggae influenced, inspiring track about being different and about self acceptance...

Boy George: My God

The above is the full audio track of the song "My God" from Boy George's new album This Is What I Do. I'm off to watch George perform in Glasgow tonight and I'm hoping this will be one of the songs he'll perform. I've included an article from UK newspaper The Telegraph, which was published a few weeks ago. It includes a video interview with George as well as a clip from the video for "Bigger Than God".

Boy George, arguably one of the most iconic artists of a generation, needs little introduction.

Not only has he had a career spanning over 30 years, which began in the Eighties when he burst onto the scene as the flamboyant front man of the Brit and Grammy Award-winning Culture Club.

From there he has had continued success as a solo artist, selling more than 150 million records, with top 10 hits in every country.

George is also an world-renowned DJ.

Now he's back with This Is What I Do, his first studio album of original material in 18 years.

 

Here the singer and DJ talks to Telegraph.co.uk about how the album, which features a version of Yoko Ono’s Death of Samantha, came together.

Talking about the album, George say: “I wanted to make a baggy album, not overproduced and I think I have achieved it.

"I was listening to things like Beast of Burden by the Stones’ and I had my head most definitely in the Seventies.

"I was also writing from a happy place. This time, no ex lovers to get revenge on. For me ‘Bigger Than War’ sums up the tone.”

Written by George and long-time collaborators John Themis, Kevan Frost and Richie Stevens (Soul II Soul, Tina Turner, Simply Red, Culture Club), This Is What I Do features a number of guest musicians, including DJ Yoda, Kitty Durham (Kitty Daisy & Lewis) and Ally McErlaine (Texas/Red Sky July), many of whom will also perform as George’s band on his tour dates.

Boy George: The King Of Everything / Titchy & Boy George: Do You Really Want To Hurt Me

I came across two fabulous Boy George songs today. The first is George's new single "The King Of Everything" from his soon to be released album This Is What I Do (his first studio album in 18 years). The video is wonderful - it's a flashback through George's life and career and I've come over all melancholic having watched it...

The second is a revamped version of Culture Club's "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" with George on the chorus, and new lyrics added by rapper Titchy. I think it's a few years old and I'm not sure if the track is actually called "DYRWTHM" as I couldn't find much information about it, but it's well worth a listen...

I’ve left the critics speechless when it comes to judging me. I was once described as half man half woman but total talent.

I come from East London and I’ve been grafting hard for 4 years and I call myself a rapper, lyricist, poet and all round nice person. People always say I’m sweet man, cos I’m short but i don’t mind cos all good things come in small packages ya get me.

I’m not like other grime artists, cos I don’t do violence and I ain’t got a criminal record.

My 1st track that I made in 2007 got loads of downloads, 2000 in the first week to be precise and I only recorded it in my bedroom.

I performed solo in nuff venues around the UK, my last gig was at the Spritz in East London before it closed.

I won different things including runner up 3 times in mc battles in plan b [Brixton]. Even though I didn’t come first the crowd thought I did and that’s what counts.

Look out for me in 2009 cos I’m about to go major with a collaboration with UK’s very own Boy George – cause he’s a boy and I’m a girl or am i? Or is he? Safe!

Euan Morton: Stranger In This World / Boy George: Il Adore

I love this song - it shows yet another side to the multi-talented Boy George, who wrote it for the musical Taboo. The song is performed by Euan Morton who played George in the musical.

The following song - "Il Adore" - was also in Taboo but wasn't sung by Boy George in the musical. This version by George is from his album Cheapness and Beauty, and is a truly heartbreaking yet beautiful song about a friend who is dying from AIDS.

Jesus Loves You (Boy George): Bow Down Mister

Any excuse for a bit more of the fabulous Boy George. This was released in the early 1990s and is such a joyous pop song. This one is for my fellow B.G. loving friend Ruth. 

Mark Ronson & The Business Intl: Somebody To Love Me ft. Boy George & Miike Snow

This is wonderful - trademark Mark Ronson with Boy George and Miike Snows' voices complementing each other perfectly. 

The video is supposed to portray Boy George's 21st birthday party. The Boy is played by actress Diane Kruger in the video.
